About
Bert Way was originally recommended to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club by Willie Dunn, Jr. after serving as his apprentice in England, helping to establish his U.S. golf career.
Bert Way (William Herbert Way) was an influential English golf course architect and professional golfer whose career bridged two continents. Born in Devon, England, he began as an apprentice to Willie Dunn, Jr. at North Devon before emigrating to the United States in 1896, where he became a naturalized citizen. Way achieved notable success as a player, tying for second at the 1899 U.S. Open. However, his lasting legacy lies in golf course design, especially in Ohio and Michigan. He is best known for designing the acclaimed South Course at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, which has hosted numerous major tournaments. His other works include Detroit Golf Club, Mayfield Country Club, and Euclid Golf Club. Way’s career was marked by prolific contributions to the evolution of American golf architecture in the early 20th century, combining British tradition with American landscapes to shape many enduring courses.
