About

David Johnson began golfing at age six with a club almost as tall as he was, sparking a lifelong passion that led him to build short golf holes in his backyard as a child.

David Johnson is a widely respected golf course architect whose career in the industry spans over 30 years. Developing a passion for golf at the age of six, Johnson parlayed his early enthusiasm into a lifelong pursuit, ultimately earning a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1988. During and after college, he gained hands-on experience working on course maintenance staffs and later as a draftsman and designer under renowned architect Robert E. Cupp. Johnson spent eight formative years with Cupp’s organization before further expanding his expertise in course construction with Medalist Golf, Inc. In 2000, he founded his own firm, David Johnson Golf Design, LLC, where he blends creative design, technical know-how, and attention to environmental stewardship. Notable works include Belmont Lake Golf Club in North Carolina, The Hooch Golf Club in Georgia, and collaborations at Farmstead Golf Links. Johnson is recognized for strategic, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally sensitive golf course designs.
