About

Gary Kern collaborated with three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin on several golf course projects, blending professional playing insight with architectural design.

Gary Lee Kern was born on December 27, 1937, in the small town of Kendallville, Indiana. He developed a passion for golf early on, beginning to play in college while attending Texas A&M University. After working in civil engineering and land surveying, Gary’s growing love for golf led him into golf course architecture, encouraged by his close working relationship with renowned architect Bill Diddel. He designed and remodeled numerous courses in the Midwest and beyond, including notable projects in the St. Louis area like Fox Run Golf Club and Crown Point Golf Club. Known as a design minimalist, Gary emphasized using natural terrain to craft courses that challenge skilled players while remaining enjoyable for all. He passed away in 2018, leaving a lasting legacy in golf course design.
