About

Gunnar Bauer was actually a medical doctor by profession before becoming renowned for his golf course architecture at Falsterbo.

Dr. Gunnar Bauer was a pioneering Swedish golf course architect, best remembered for transforming Falsterbo Golf Club into one of the premier links courses outside the UK and Ireland. Originally a local doctor, Bauer brought his passion for golf and the natural landscape to the forefront when he designed Falsterbo’s acclaimed 18-hole layout in 1930. Building on Robert Turnbull’s initial nine holes, Bauer’s vision utilized the unique coastal features of the Falsterbo peninsula, blending the course seamlessly with its environment and creating a rugged, strategic links that has stood the test of time. His architectural skill is evident in the course’s routing, maximizing the small 110-acre site and delivering iconic holes, including the memorable sixteenth, named in his honor. Bauer later adapted and refined the design, especially after 1934, ensuring Falsterbo’s continued reputation as a top Swedish course and a destination for links golf enthusiasts.
