About

John Morrison was not only a celebrated architect but also a military pilot who served with distinction in two world wars and was one of the first to land an aircraft on a carrier.

John Stanton Fleming Morrison (1892–1961) was a distinguished English golf course architect renowned for his collaboration with Harry Colt and for his leadership in the Colt, Alison & Morrison firm. Beginning his career as Colt’s assistant in 1924, Morrison quickly established himself as a talented draughtsman, becoming a director of the company in 1928. He oversaw many overseas commissions, particularly across Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Italy, and was instrumental in designing and remodelling celebrated courses such as Prince’s Golf Club (Kent), Barlassina and Biella (Italy), Frankfurter and Hamburg-Falkenstein (Germany), Royal Haagsche (Netherlands), and Stockholm Golf Club (Sweden). Morrison’s hallmark was the use of raised plateau greens and dramatic bunkering, especially in his German projects. He remained influential in shaping post-war European golf architecture and was credited for bringing natural beauty and strategic complexity to course design until his death in 1961.
