About

Larry Nelson learned to play golf in his 20s by studying Ben Hogan’s book, broke 100 his first round, and shot below 70 within nine months—a feat rarely matched among elite golfers.

Larry Nelson is a celebrated American professional golfer and golf course architect, born in 1947. A latecomer to the sport, Nelson didn’t begin playing golf until age 21 after returning from military service in Vietnam, quickly mastering the game by studying Ben Hogan’s fundamentals. He turned professional in 1971 and found notable success, winning ten PGA Tour events—including three major championships (1981 and 1987 PGA Championships, 1983 U.S. Open)—and 19 Champions Tour titles. Nelson’s Ryder Cup record is one of the best, going 9–3–1 as a U.S. team member. In addition to his competitive accolades, Nelson has made significant contributions to golf course architecture. Among his notable designs is the Wild Wing golf course in Myrtle Beach, acclaimed for its natural beauty and playability. Nelson’s deep understanding of the game and creative vision have established him not only as an elite player but also as an influential figure in course design.
