About

Michael Clayton was not only a celebrated professional golfer with nine tour wins, but also gave advice to future Olympic golfer Su Oh as a caddie at the 2016 Rio Games, highlighting his broad influence across both the competitive and design sides of golf.

Michael Clayton is a prominent Australian golf course architect and former professional golfer with nine wins on the European and Australasian Tours. After his playing career, Clayton’s passion for course design led him into architecture in the mid-1990s, initially consulting at Victoria Golf Club, where his vision for bunker restoration shaped his path in design. He co-founded OCCM with partners Mike Cocking, Ashley Mead, and major champion Geoff Ogilvy, overseeing restoration and redesign projects at celebrated clubs such as Royal Canberra, The Lakes, Commonwealth, and the internationally acclaimed Barnbougle Dunes, which he co-designed with Tom Doak. In 2019, he launched a new global practice, Clayton, DeVries & Pont, with an expanded reach into Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States. Clayton’s career is notable for his focus on course renovation and restoration, creativity inspired by classic design, and continued impact on the evolution of Australian golf architecture.
