About

At the revered St. Charles Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg, Woods is one of only three designers on record for the three nines, sharing the honor alongside Alister MacKenzie and Donald Ross.

Norman H. Woods (1908–1987) was a prolific Canadian golf course architect, renowned especially in western Canada. After studying agronomy at the Ontario Agricultural College, Woods apprenticed under legendary designer Stanley Thompson, contributing to over 50 projects nationwide during a 15-year partnership. Following Thompson’s death, Woods established his own practice in Penticton, British Columbia, and over the next 25 years, became responsible for designing or remodeling approximately 250 courses across Canada and parts of the United States. His hallmark was the creation of accessible, playable courses, often focusing on smaller and remote communities. Notable designs include Kokanee Springs Golf Resort, Falcon Lake Golf Course, Willow Park Golf and Country Club, and contributions to St. Charles Golf and Country Club. Woods joined the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1953 and remained a member for 22 years, earning recognition for shaping the landscape of Canadian golf.
