W. Bruce Matthews III is a third-generation golf course architect based in Michigan, renowned for his role in extending his family’s distinguished legacy in golf design. A Michigan State University graduate and member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Bruce has been instrumental in shaping over 36 new courses and renovating more than 80, including many classic Ross, Langford, and Park Jr. courses. His background spans course design, ownership, management, and instruction—having taught at both Michigan State and Beijing Forestry University. Known for his keen sense of routing, Bruce’s designs emphasize both playability and environmental harmony, resulting in courses noted for their visual excitement and operational practicality.
