About

Pickeman’s initiative to create a golf links on Portmarnock’s peninsula was sparked by a rowing trip in late December during winter, showcasing his dedication despite challenging weather, which led to one of Ireland’s most famous links courses, Portmarnock GC.

William C. Pickeman was a golf course architect born in Montrose, Scotland, in 1868. He started his career as an insurance clerk and golfer. Pickeman became known for designing and laying out several golf courses, primarily in Ireland, including the original layout of the Portmarnock Golf Club in 1894. He collaborated on course designs and sought advice from other golf architects like Mungo Park. He played a key role in shaping early golf architecture in that region and influenced other notable designers. Pickeman passed away in 1931 at his home in Dublin. His work includes designing or redesigning about twenty golf courses, and he was instrumental in the founding and design of Portmarnock Golf Club, which is considered a classic links course.
