Course Report
Black Creek Club is recognized as Tennessee's only Top 100 Residential Golf Course and pays architectural homage to Golden Age designers through features like squared greens and dramatic bunkering reminiscent of Seth Raynor’s celebrated layouts.
About
Black Creek Club, established in 1996 and designed by Brian Silva, is an 18-hole private course inspired by the Golden Age designs of Seth Raynor and Charles Blair Macdonald. It offers a classic parkland experience with over 7,200 yards, notable for its deep bunkering, squared green complexes, and strategic routing amid Tennessee’s natural beauty.
Caddie Tip
The strategic bunkering and doglegs demand precise tee shots; on approach, favor the center of greens as edges often feature sharp drop-offs and deep hazards. Allow for elevation changes, particularly on the back nine. Good course planning trumps length—avoid short-siding yourself to have the best chance to score.
The Main Challenge
The course’s main challenges stem from its demanding bunkering, creative green complexes, and variable elevation changes. Several holes require thoughtful placement both off the tee and on approach, with deep bunkers penalizing errant shots and putting a premium on accuracy rather than sheer length. Greens contouring tests even skilled putters, especially at higher speeds.
The Good
Members consistently praise the course’s classic architectural touches and natural integration with the landscape, particularly the variety and challenge of the holes. Many enjoy its peaceful, scenic atmosphere, and regard the well-contoured greens and distinct bunkering as the standout aspects that set Black Creek apart from more generic modern layouts.
The Not So Good
Some golfers mention the pace of play can be sporadic during busy member events, and that certain drainage spots can get soggy after heavy rain. Others have suggested minor updates to the clubhouse interiors and additional forward tee options to improve accessibility for higher handicap and senior players.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The signature hole at Black Creek Club is the par-3 17th, known as the “Biarritz.” This 206–243 yard hole features a distinctive, 75-yard-long green divided by a deep swale, demanding precise shot placement and strategic thinking. Its classic design, inspired by famed Biarritz greens, makes it a favorite among both golf enthusiasts and architecture lovers.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse includes both fine and casual dining, a fully-stocked pro shop, fitness center, locker rooms, and a tiered infinity pool. There are also community events, tennis courts, and a dog park. Members enjoy year-round access with modern comforts, though the emphasis remains on relaxation and recreation.
Practice Facilities
Black Creek Club offers a comprehensive practice facility featuring a full-length driving range, short game area with sand bunkers, and a putting green. The professional staff provides lessons, custom club fittings, and regular clinics. Members appreciate the well-maintained surfaces and the quiet, scenic area for pre-round warmup.
