Course Report

It is one of the northernmost golf courses in the world, and wildlife like moose and foxes are frequent visitors, sometimes even interfering with play.

About

Black Diamond Golf Course, designed and operated by Mary Usibelli and family, offers a rugged yet scenic 9-hole experience built on Alaskan tundra. Located by Otto Lake near Denali, its links-like layout features natural hazards, wildlife, and panoramic mountain vistas, providing a unique round in Alaska’s wild outdoors.

Caddie Tip

The tundra-based fairways can be unpredictable and rough, so focus on solid contact and plan for shorter roll out. Watch for unique Alaskan hazards, including wildlife and natural marshes. Accurate approach shots are crucial, as greens are firm and small. Bring extra balls in case a fox or moose decides to join the game.

The Main Challenge

The real challenge at Black Diamond is managing the natural tundra lies and local wildlife hazards. The course was built with little topsoil, so solid ball striking and patience are required. The rugged terrain and firm greens demand precision, while the scenic distractions are constant.

The Good

Golfers love the truly Alaskan setting, with sweeping views of Denali’s mountains, Otto Lake, and abundant wildlife sightings. The relaxed, friendly atmosphere and unique tundra terrain combine for an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime round that feels completely distinct from traditional courses.

The Not So Good

While the setting is stunning, the rugged tundra surface and lack of manicured turf make for challenging lies and sometimes unpredictable bounces. Some guests mention that course conditioning could be improved, especially in wet weather when drainage is limited.
