Course Report
Erin Hills is one of the few public courses in the U.S. to host a U.S. Open, joining a select list that includes courses like Pebble Beach and Pinehurst No. 2.
About
Erin Hills is a championship, links-style golf course set across more than 650 acres of glacial terrain northwest of Milwaukee. Designed by Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry, and Ron Whitten, it has hosted the 2017 U.S. Open and several USGA championships. The rolling fescue fairways and firm, undulating greens provide a demanding yet beautiful test for golfers.
Caddie Tip
Trust the yardages, as the open terrain and wind can visually distort distances. On approach shots, favor below the hole, as many greens slope from back to front and can be extremely quick and punishing from above. Bring extra balls; the native fescue swallows misses.
The Main Challenge
The tough walk, unpredictable wind, thick fescue rough, and undulating, firm greens create a relentless test that demands strategic planning and execution on every hole. The course rewards bold play but punishes errant shots with penal bunkering and difficult recoveries.
The Good
Golfers most love the dramatic natural landscape, the sense of seclusion on sprawling fairways, and the strategic challenge reminiscent of classic links courses. The conditioning is tournament level, and the overall atmosphere, with onsite lodging and dining, makes for a memorable golf destination.
The Not So Good
Some guests remark that pace of play can be slow during peak times. Others cite the walk as highly demanding because carts are not allowed and the terrain is quite hilly, making the round physically taxing for less-experienced or less-fit players.
Signature Hole:
#
9
Hole 9, a par 3, measures over 165 yards from the middle tees and is visually dramatic with a green set diagonally across deep natural bunkers and fescue. The wind and elevation changes can make club selection difficult, and the green’s contours offer a stern putting challenge for any player.
Clubhouse
Amenities include upscale locker rooms, a well-stocked golf shop, casual grill, formal dining, and overnight accommodations in The Lodge, offering modern comforts and views of the course, plus on-site cottages for group stays.
Practice Facilities
Erin Hills offers a spacious outdoor driving range with all-grass tees, dedicated short game area with bunkers, large putting green, and a unique, illuminated putting course designed for fun and skill practice before or after rounds.
