Course Report

The Tudor-style clubhouse was designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn, and incorporates fieldstones sourced from the property itself.

About

Franklin Hills Country Club features a nationally ranked, classic 18-hole Donald Ross design, stretching over 7,000 yards. Located in suburban Detroit, this prestigious private club blends tradition with modern amenities, including state-of-the-art practice facilities. The Tudor-style clubhouse, originally designed by Albert Kahn, adds historic charm and rounds out the elite member experience.

Caddie Tip

Stay below the hole on approach shots—Donald Ross’s trademark greens can be severely contoured and quick, making downhill putts especially tricky. Course management off the tee is key, as many fairways are tree-lined and proper angles into greens offer a big advantage.

The Main Challenge

Franklin Hills tests every aspect of your game, especially with demanding approach shots to elevated, well-bunkered greens. The subtle slopes and fast speeds on the Donald Ross greens require precise putting and short game execution to score well.

The Good

Members often praise the classic layout and exceptional conditioning of the Donald Ross design. The course’s rolling terrain and strategic bunkering provide an enjoyable but challenging round, while the historic clubhouse and attentive service contribute to a true club atmosphere.

The Not So Good

While the course receives high marks for conditioning, some guests mention pace of play can slow during peak hours. The club’s exclusivity and strict membership policies can also make access difficult for prospective golfers.
