Course Report

Sunrise was Jack Nicklaus’s 100th career design and plays at more than 7,000 feet above sea level, making it considerably shorter than its yardage suggests.

About

Las Campanas (Sunrise), designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1993, is the elder of two championship-caliber 18-hole layouts at The Club at Las Campanas. Routed through high-desert terrain with mountain vistas, the course is famed for its strategic bunkering and smooth bentgrass playing surfaces, consistently earning accolades as one of New Mexico's top private golf experiences.

Caddie Tip

Altitude affects distance dramatically here—expect an extra 10-15% carry. The greens are large with subtle undulations, so take your time reading putts. Being aggressive off the tee is often rewarded, but errant shots can quickly find desert native or deep bunker trouble.

The Main Challenge

Sunrise presents its stiffest test in the combination of length, bunkering, and elevated greens, especially at altitude. The closing stretch is particularly demanding, with hazards and elevation changes pushing shot-making, while swirling winds and the firmness of high-desert turf require precise club selection.

The Good

Members and guests rave about the peaceful high desert surroundings, mountain panoramas, and the overall sense of seclusion. The bentgrass greens run exceptionally true, and the variety of strategic holes, each framed by a scenic backcloth, create an elite, rewarding golf experience for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Comments occasionally mention the course can play very firm and fast in the driest summer spells, making landing approach shots and holding greens more difficult than intended. Expanded water features and additional tee options might help balance challenge across all skill levels.
