Course Report
The site of the current club was originally China’s first golf course, dating back to the early 1930s when it served as a diplomatic venue for Chinese officials and international dignitaries.
About
Nanjing Zhongshan International Golf Club’s Mountain Course, designed by Gary Player in 2005, features significant elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and sweeping views of Zhongshan Mountain. The course’s clever bunkering and strategic layout challenge power hitters while rewarding precision and course management. Its history as China’s first diplomatic golf site enhances the playing experience.
Caddie Tip
Take advantage of the caddies’ course knowledge, especially on the sloping greens and blind tee shots. They can guide you on the elevation changes, accurate lines over hazards, and club selection for uphill or downhill approaches, which is essential given the Mountain Course’s undulating terrain and strategic bunkering.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect is managing elevation changes, both off the tees and on approaches. The hilly terrain, combined with long forced carries and narrow landing areas, penalizes wayward shots. The Mountain Course also features multi-tiered greens with subtle breaks, making putting and green reading crucial for scoring well.
The Good
Golfers praise the Mountain Course’s beautiful elevation changes, mature forest setting, and panoramic vistas of Purple Mountain. The strategic design by Gary Player offers variety and memorable holes, with clever routing that rewards thoughtful play and provides a feeling of isolation on each fairway.
The Not So Good
Visitors often mention tricky pace-of-play issues on busy days and wish for improved bunker conditioning after rainy spells. Occasional language barriers may impact communication, and the challenging green complexes can frustrate high-handicap players who are unfamiliar with severe slopes.
Signature Hole:
#
2
The par 4 second hole demands an over-the-pond tee shot to a narrow fairway flanked by a pond left and trees right. The uphill approach, guarded by bunkers on both sides, leads to a vertically long green protected by a right-side bunker, making this a challenging highlight of the Mountain Course.
Clubhouse
Expect a luxurious, modern clubhouse with fine dining, lounge areas, locker rooms, a pro shop, event spaces, and hotel accommodations. The atmosphere is elegant yet welcoming, providing relaxation and full-service hospitality for both local and international guests.
Practice Facilities
The club features an 80-bay driving range, chipping and putting greens, and short-game practice areas, offering ample opportunity to warm up, work on your game, or take lessons before playing.
