Course Report
Naruo Golf Club features a mechanized traction system for caddies to navigate the exceptionally hilly terrain, using magnets and remote controls—a unique response to its status as one of the most physically demanding walks in Japanese golf.
About
Naruo Golf Club, located in the hills between Kobe and Osaka, is a renowned private course designed by the Crane brothers with revisions by C.H. Alison in 1930. Featuring a classic, strategic parkland layout known for narrow fairways, dramatic terrain, deep bunkering, and challenging 'korai' grass greens, Naruo is widely considered one of Japan's most admired and historic courses.
Caddie Tip
Pay careful attention to the grain and speed of the korai greens—putting against the grain can be deceivingly slow. On the many holes involving the property’s steep undulation and gully features, err short of the pin to avoid fast run-offs and tricky recovery shots.
The Main Challenge
Naruo’s primary challenge lies in its narrow fairways, demanding precise driving to avoid dense rough and strategic bunkering. The course’s hilly terrain introduces uneven lies and elevation changes throughout, while small, sloping greens demand high skill on approach shots and deft putting touch.
The Good
Golfers are particularly enamored with the strategic design, classic bunkering, and the way the course uses its dramatic, hilly setting to shape shot values. The blend of historic character and challenging golf appeals to both purists and those seeking an authentic Japanese club experience.
The Not So Good
The korai greens are slower than most international players expect and can baffle those who struggle with grain. Some golfers wish for slightly lusher fairways, while the rigorous walk—although unique—can be exhausting and limits access for those with mobility needs.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The par-4 17th at Naruo Golf Club is the standout among the final stretch, requiring a strong approach played from beyond a ridge to a brilliant green set atop another, making both club selection and accuracy paramount on this memorable and challenging finishing hole.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse exudes understated traditional luxury, with refined locker rooms, Japanese and Western dining, private lounges, and panoramic views of the Rokko mountains. Excellent shower, bath, and changing facilities highlight a standard of comfort focused on member experience over excess.
Practice Facilities
Players will find a modest driving range for warm-up, short game area, and putting greens, all well-maintained but traditional in style. Expect high levels of club etiquette and attentive service, with caddies assisting practice as needed but no over-the-top resort amenities.
