Course Report

Old Waverly hosted the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur, helping put Mississippi golf on the national stage.

About

Old Waverly Club is a highly ranked, scenic golf destination in Mississippi designed by U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate and acclaimed architect Bob Cupp. Set among hardwoods, lakes, and gently rolling terrain, it’s known for championship-level shot values, strategic variety, deep pot bunkers, and hosting the 1999 U.S. Women's Open and 2019 U.S. Women's Amateur.

Caddie Tip

Strategic placement off the tee is crucial on most holes, as deep pot bunkers and water hazards come into play. Play conservatively on risk/reward holes—missing on the short side can make for extremely difficult recovery shots. Focus on approach precision and lag putting on subtly contoured greens.

The Main Challenge

The real test at Old Waverly lies in its fast, undulating greens and numerous pot bunkers that guard landing areas and approaches. Many holes force tough decisions off the tee with risk/reward options and water hazards threatening both aggressive and conservative play styles.

The Good

Golfers praise Old Waverly’s championship legacy, beautiful lake views, and the high-quality, varied design by Jerry Pate and Bob Cupp. The memorable finishing stretch and a number of risk/reward holes provide an experience with significant strategic interest and replay value.

The Not So Good

Some guests note that the course can play very firm and fast in the summer months, leading to challenging chipping around the greens. Others wish for even more upgraded clubhouse dining and a larger pro shop to match the course’s reputation as a destination club.
