Course Report

Tiger Woods played the course in the 2002 New Zealand Open when ranked world number 1, making Paraparaumu Beach one of only a handful of courses in New Zealand graced by his presence.

About

Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, designed by Alex Russell in 1949, is renowned as one of the finest true links courses in the Southern Hemisphere. Modeled after the classic links of Britain and Ireland, it features undulating terrain set amidst dramatic coastal dunes just north of Wellington. The course has hosted 12 New Zealand Opens and is celebrated for its strategic layout and pure golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Play the ball low to manage the often high Kapiti Coast winds. Focus on bump-and-run approaches around the greens since tight lies and firm links turf make aerial shots tricky. Pay close attention to subtle undulations on fairways and greens—course knowledge saves shots, especially on blind approaches.

The Main Challenge

The biggest challenge at Paraparaumu Beach is managing changing wind conditions and the firm, rolling surfaces. Accurate driving is essential to stay on narrow fairways, while approaches demand judgment of bounce and run. The small, undulating greens punish missed targets—recovery from deep fescue rough or native dunes can make for difficult pars.

The Good

Golfers rave about the authentic links experience, with fast, firm fescue turf and natural sand dunes defining every shot. The strategic layout rewards creative play and thoughtful shot-making, making the round memorable for both competitive golfers and casual players. The welcoming atmosphere and club history add to the experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers mention that the greens, while true, can become very firm and fast, increasing difficulty—especially for high handicappers. Others note the wind often increases the challenge, and course signage can be confusing for first-time visitors. Improved weather protection and more on-course shelters could enhance enjoyment.

Signature Hole:

#

17

No items found.

The par 3 17th at Paraparaumu Beach is considered its signature hole. With shifting winds and an elevated, undulating green tightly guarded by deep bunkers, this hole demands precision both off the tee and in approach. Its natural contours embody classic links design, providing a memorable and challenging penultimate test for all players.

Clubhouse

Facilities include a welcoming clubhouse with full restaurant and bar, locker rooms, showers, and meeting rooms. The lounge and balcony overlook the closing holes, providing a great setting for post-round gatherings. The pro shop is stocked with merchandise and rental equipment.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The club offers a driving range, short-game practice area, and putting greens, well-maintained for year-round use. Instruction and clinics are available. While facilities are functional rather than lavish, surfaces mirror on-course turf, providing an ideal environment for links-style practice.
