Course Report
At over 8,000 yards, Painted Valley is not only one of the longest courses ever built by Jack Nicklaus but was also ranked the third best 'New Private Course' in the U.S. by Golf Digest in 2007.
About
The Nicklaus Painted Valley Course at Promontory Club in Park City spans over 8,000 yards, making it one of the longest and most challenging layouts in the nation. Designed by Jack Nicklaus in 2007, this private mountain links-style course plays through undulating, high-altitude valleys with stunning mountain vistas and bold bunkering.
Caddie Tip
Club selection is paramount at altitude—expect your ball to travel farther than you think. The greens are large with subtle undulations, so take extra time to study breaks and speed. Favor the wide side of fairways; trouble lurks in the deep Nicklaus-style bunkering.
The Main Challenge
The sheer length, at over 8,000 yards and a slope of 146, makes Painted Valley a 'brutal' test. The large, open fairways are deceptive—strategic bunkering and uneven lies punish missed shots, while the fast, undulating greens demand touch and precision. Altitude and wind amplify the difficulty, testing every club and skill.
The Good
Golfers are consistently amazed by the sheer beauty of the mountain setting and the epic, sprawling design. The playing conditions are excellent with panoramic alpine views, offering a true test for even skilled players. The dramatic elevation changes and variety of hole lengths make for a memorable experience.
The Not So Good
The course's extreme length and challenging walkability are a common complaint, often requiring carts to traverse. Non-members note that access is limited and the round can feel especially daunting for higher handicaps. Wind exposure and high-altitude conditions can make scoring difficult for less experienced players.
Signature Hole:
#
12
The signature hole at Promontory Club's Painted Valley Course is the dramatic 12th, a 673-yard par-5 that embodies the course’s scale and challenge. This double dogleg hole plays downhill from the tee to a heavily bunkered fairway, then back uphill into prevailing winds toward the green, all set against stunning mountain and valley views. It’s a true test of strategy and skill
Clubhouse
Members enjoy resort-style amenities, including a beautifully appointed clubhouse with dining, locker rooms, lounges, pro shop, and event spaces. There are private meeting rooms, spa services, fitness facilities, and spectacular terraces overlooking the course, providing every comfort on and off the fairways.
Practice Facilities
The extensive practice area includes a large driving range, dedicated short game zones, putting greens, and an on-site Golf Academy offering lessons and clinics for all levels. Top instruction, video analysis, and club fitting services are available, making it ideal for those committed to improving their game.
