About

Quinta do Lago South Course is a renowned parkland layout in the Algarve, Portugal, designed by William Mitchell in 1974. A favourite with European Tour pros, it is famous for its strategic routing through umbrella pines and lakes with views over the Ria Formosa nature reserve. The course hosts major championships, including eight Portuguese Opens, and provides a challenge for all abilities.

Caddie Tip

Prioritize positioning off the tee—doglegs and pine trees frequently block direct routes to greens. On the front nine, a draw works best, while a fade is favoured on the back. For the 15th, take an extra club if the wind is up and be cautious of the water short left.

The Main Challenge

The strategic layout places a premium on accuracy off the tee and approach, with numerous doglegs and well-positioned hazards. The final three holes, especially the long par 4 18th, are particularly demanding, as even skilled players face tough tests amidst tight landing areas and undulating greens.

The Good

Golfers rave about the course’s immaculate conditioning, strategic design, and striking setting among umbrella pines with lake and Ria Formosa views. The closing stretch, in particular, is memorable both for scenery and shot value, with finishing holes testing every club in the bag.

The Not So Good

Some golfers desire faster play during peak times, and note occasional wear near landing zones and greens during high season. The course’s popularity can mean tee times are limited, and green fees are among the highest in the Algarve.
