Course Report
Royal County Down is one of the very few clubs outside Scotland and England to receive Royal status by the British monarch, and the 9th hole is one of the most photographed in golf.
About
Royal County Down Golf Club, designed by Old Tom Morris, Harry Colt, and others, is a world-renowned links set against the Mountains of Mourne and Dundrum Bay. Opened in 1889, the classic course features dramatic dunes, firm fescue fairways, and superb natural beauty. Consistently ranked among the world's best, it regularly hosts elite amateur and professional events.
Caddie Tip
Royal County Down sways and undulates; trust your caddie for blind tee shots, especially on holes like the 4th and 9th, where local knowledge helps avoid hidden trouble. Playing conservatively off the tee and aiming for the safe side of fairways often pays off, as aggressive lines can be severely punished by dense gorse and deep bunkers.
The Main Challenge
Royal County Down’s biggest challenge is its penal rough and numerous blind tee shots, which can unsettle even the most skilled players. The wind off Dundrum Bay is often a major factor. Strategic play and patience are essential; recovery shots from gorse are rarely possible, making precision off the tee and thoughtful approach shots critical throughout the round.
The Good
Golfers rave about the course’s scenery, especially the constantly changing views across Dundrum Bay and the dramatic peaks of the Mountains of Mourne. The natural links layout, undulating fairways, firm fescue turf, and gorse-lined corridors provide one of the most visually stunning and inspiring golfing experiences anywhere in the world.
The Not So Good
Some visitors note that repeated blind shots can be intimidating or frustrating for first-time players. The rough and gorse are penal and can make errant play unrecoverable, causing slow play and high scores, especially for less experienced golfers. Occasional crowding and long rounds on busier days can impact the overall pace.
Signature Hole:
#
9
The par 4 9th hole at Royal County Down is world famous for its panoramic views over Dundrum Bay and the Mountains of Mourne. A demanding tee shot over a huge expanse of gorse leads to a blind landing area and a raised, bunker-guarded green. The second shot requires precision and nerve. Iconic and breathtaking.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse is classic and welcoming, with the renowned Murlough Room bar and dining area overlooking the 18th green and Mourne Mountains. Locker rooms, pro shop, full restaurant, and bar service are available. The decor honors the club’s long history and tradition, providing an elegant atmosphere for members and guests.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a dedicated short game area, putting green, and basic long game practice ground, though practice facilities are relatively limited compared to modern standards. The setting is beautiful, but expect more traditional than high-tech amenities. Range balls and caddie services are available for guests.
