Course Report
The Lido at Sand Valley is a near-exact digital and physical recreation of the original Lido Golf Club, which was lost during World War II. Every undulation, bunker, and template feature was painstakingly rebuilt using historical blueprints and 3D modeling.
About
The Lido at Sand Valley is a meticulously reconstructed homage to C.B. Macdonald's legendary long-lost course, designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2023. Set in the sandy dunes of central Wisconsin, it showcases world-class architecture with template holes, massive undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and a firm, fast links experience. It’s among the boldest golf recreations ever built.
Caddie Tip
Approach shots here demand supreme precision—study the pin location before committing, as the massive and tiered greens reward only the precisely executed shot. Let your caddie guide you through strategic carry lines off the tee, and always factor in the wind, which can shift throughout the round.
The Main Challenge
The Lido’s challenge centers on its dramatic bunkering, forced carries, and greens that demand absolute control on approach shots. Large, abrupt tiers require smart navigation, especially in the frequent wind, while any short game mistakes can lead to punishing recoveries from deep hazards or run-off areas.
The Good
Golfers rave about the boldness of the design—a truly authentic links golfing experience set in the heart of Wisconsin's sand dunes. The enormous, undulating greens and stunning recreation of C.B. Macdonald’s classic templates make every hole distinctive and memorable, rewarding thoughtful strategy and creative shot-making.
The Not So Good
Some players note the severe slopes and scale of the greens make putting and approach shots extremely demanding for higher-handicap golfers. On busy resort days, pace of play can be moderate as players navigate the strategic and visually intimidating hazards, so patience may be required.
Signature Hole:
#
4
The par-5 4th hole features a heroic crossing of a water inlet, with a visually intimidating bunker short of the green. Two well-executed shots set up a strategic approach to a sprawling, contoured green with multiple tiers. The exacting placement of bunkers and risk-reward options create a thrilling and memorable highlight on the outward nine.
Clubhouse
Players enjoy access to a modern clubhouse with full locker rooms, dining options, pro shop, and relaxed lounge spaces. Food and beverage options are of high quality, with attentive staff and stunning views of the Sand Valley landscape from the clubhouse patio.
Practice Facilities
The resort provides a superb driving range, short game area, and practice putting green—all maintained to extremely high standards. Players can expect excellent turf conditions mirroring the course itself, with enough space to warm up and work on all aspects of their game.
