Course Report

Sea Mountain is often called the toughest 9-hole course in Alaska, featuring blind tee shots, steep drop-offs, and uniquely elevated greens. The challenging conditions, combined with stunning ocean and mountain views, make it a memorable place to play.

About

Sea Mountain Golf Course is a 9-hole public course in Sitka, Alaska, established in 2008. Managed by the Sitka Golf Association, it is renowned for its dramatic mountain and ocean views. The layout includes artificial turf greens and grass fairways. The course provides a fun, challenging golf experience for all skill levels, with a driving range and full-service clubhouse.

Caddie Tip

Bring extra golf balls—off-line shots can be punished by steep drop-offs and thick native growth. Many tee shots are blind or partially obscured, so favor accuracy over length and take conservative lines to keep it in play. Watch out for elevated greens that make approach shots tricky, especially if it’s wet.

The Main Challenge

Sea Mountain tests golfers with narrow, sloped fairways and frequent blind tee shots requiring precise placement. Steep drop-offs and thick native vegetation punish errant shots. Elevated greens, often with artificial turf, demand careful approach planning—especially when wet or windy conditions are present.

The Good

Golfers love Sea Mountain’s captivating settings, with panoramic vistas of Sitka Sound, Mt. Edgecumbe, and Harbor Mountain at nearly every hole. The course’s quirky, challenging layout and the sense of golfing on the very edge of Alaska offer a one-of-a-kind adventure rarely found elsewhere.

The Not So Good

Golfers often mention the artificial greens and tee boxes as being less satisfying than natural turf, with teeing off sometimes awkward and putting surfaces feeling quite different from standard grass. Drainage and wet conditions after rain are also a consistent challenge here.
