Course Report

Sequoyah National is owned and operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and every hole weaves in elements of Cherokee culture and legends, making this one of the most culturally significant golf courses in the Southeast.

About

Sequoyah National Golf Club offers a stunning Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed mountain course with panoramic views of the Great Smoky Mountains in western North Carolina. Opened in 2009 and owned by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, the course features bent-grass greens, zoysia fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and a strong connection to Cherokee heritage, making it both scenic and challenging.

Caddie Tip

Club selection and course management are crucial due to dramatic elevation changes and visually deceptive lines. On several holes, tees are perched high above fairways; ensure to aim for generous landing areas and avoid being too aggressive into wooded edges. Take advantage of GPS cart instructions for each hole, and ask staff advice about tee choice for your skill level.

The Main Challenge

The course’s greatest challenge lies in the dramatic elevation changes and visually intimidating sightlines on tee shots. Frequent sidehill lies and unpredictable ball movement off mountain slopes require precision and thoughtful club selection. Several holes wind along cliff edges or over deep ravines, rewarding careful play over aggressive risks.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the truly spectacular mountain scenery available from every hole, with long-range views over the Smokies and dramatic elevation changes, especially in fall foliage. The overall condition of the bentgrass greens and fairways routinely exceeds expectations, and the strong sense of Cherokee heritage and lore adds a memorable, unique character to the experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for expanded practice facilities, especially a driving range that allows drivers instead of irons only. Others note a demanding pace with walking required due to cart path-only rules after rain, and strategic signage/navigation could be further enhanced to help first-time visitors negotiate the unique layout.

Signature Hole:

#

15

No items found.

Hole 15 is a dramatic par 4 with a large elevation drop from the tee and woods framing both sides of the fairway. Precise club selection is crucial, as long shots can easily disappear into the woods. The challenge comes from the dramatic elevation and intriguing sightlines, creating a visually memorable and strategic hole in the heart of the mountains.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse offers a pro shop with equipment and apparel, locker rooms, and a small grill serving food and beverages. Friendly staff, tournament/tournament event hosting capabilities, and stunning mountain views from the patio round out the amenities. Visitors can also enjoy nearby luxury hotel accommodations and casino options.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Sequoyah National has a practice area offering a driving range (limited to irons only), putting greens, and a chipping area. PGA-certified instructors provide lessons and club fitting by appointment. The space is well-maintained but limited for those wishing to hit longer clubs.
