Course Report

St Andrews Old Course established the modern 18-hole round in 1764, setting the global standard for course design.

About

The Old Course at St Andrews, regarded as the oldest golf course in the world, is a historic public links located in St Andrews, Fife. Its design evolved naturally over centuries, with influential figures like Old Tom Morris shaping its layout. Legendary for its strategic bunkering, undulating fairways, and storied setting, it hosts The Open Championship regularly.

Caddie Tip

Play smart and stay short of the deep, penal bunkers. Avoid going long on approach shots, especially at the 17th and 18th. Caddies advise aiming left off the tee on 17 to keep clear of the hotel and the Road Hole bunker. Embrace links golf by keeping shots low if the wind picks up.

The Main Challenge

Wind direction can transform the course from scorable to brutal. Avoiding the deep bunkers is essential — recovery is often just to escape. The blind tee shot over the hotel at 17, tricky undulating greens, and ever-present OB highlight why this layout tests every skill in the bag.

The Good

Golfers praise the course’s rich history, legendary routing, and the magical feeling of walking in the footsteps of past champions. The Swilcan Bridge, unique double greens, and proximity to St Andrews town create an unmatched sense of occasion and nostalgia for every golfer.

The Not So Good

Players often call for more consistent greens speed at all times of year and note that the course can become crowded, resulting in slow rounds. The unpredictable Scottish weather can also make the experience less pleasant for some, especially during summer rain.

Signature Hole:

#

17

The 17th hole, known as the 'Road Hole', is a par 4 that is infamous for its dogleg right, blind tee shot over the Old Course Hotel, deep Road Hole bunker guarding the green, and the dangerous stone road and wall behind. It is one of the most challenging and recognizable holes in golf.

Clubhouse

Several clubhouses on the Links property with restaurants, bars, locker rooms, showers, and pro shop. Multiple historic membership clubs are nearby. Excellent food offerings and space for post-round gatherings.

Practice Facilities

Features a modern golf academy, large range, putting green, chipping and bunker areas all within walking distance from the course. The Links Clubhouse offers lockers, showers, club rental, and views of the first and 18th holes.
