Course Report
Sugarloaf is the only Robert Trent Jones, Jr. course in Maine and has consistently been ranked as the state’s top golf course.
About
Sugarloaf Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is a renowned mountain course in Maine. Known for its challenging layout, fast undulating greens, and standout scenic views, it has been named the best course in Maine by Golf Digest 29 times. Open seasonally, it offers a quintessential New England golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Keep approach shots below the hole on most greens—the undulations and speed punish putts from above. Take an extra club on uphill holes and be wary of swirling winds in the valley. Course knowledge pays off, so consult the yardage book before attacking pins.
The Main Challenge
The toughest challenge at Sugarloaf is managing steep elevation changes, swirling winds, and lightning-fast, undulating greens. Precision approach shots are vital, especially when greens are hard and quick. Holes like 10 and 11 demand both length and accuracy, punishing even slight miscues with hazards or tough recoveries.
The Good
Golfers rave about the breathtaking mountain scenery, especially during peak foliage. Several dramatic elevation changes ensure memorable tee shots. The routing, with holes winding up, over, and back down the mountain, creates a unique, challenging, and highly photogenic experience rarely found outside of the Rockies or Appalachians.
The Not So Good
Practice range mats and balls are lower quality than the course itself, and elevation changes make some walks between holes strenuous. Some visitors report the cart path routing is confusing in places. Play can be slow on busy weekends, especially on front nine.
Signature Hole:
#
11
The 11th hole, a par 5, is Sugarloaf’s most iconic. Tee shots launch downhill through a dramatic mountain corridor, but a river guards the landing area and green, demanding precise shot placement. Majestic mountain views and risk-reward design make the 11th unforgettable and a true challenge for every player.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features Strokes Bar & Grille with mountain views, a pro shop stocked with premium equipment and apparel, modern locker rooms, and friendly staff. Guests can also enjoy outdoor seating, event space, and access to the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel amenities when booked as a package.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a full driving range, chipping and putting greens, but the range balls and mats could use updating. Golf schools and private instruction are available. Facilities are open to both members and visitors during operating hours.
