Course Report

Jack Nicklaus played holes 10 through 13 on opening day, shooting three under par at age 72.

About

Summit Rock Golf Course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design in the heart of Texas Hill Country, near Lake LBJ. Opened in 2012, this private 18-hole layout offers dramatic elevation changes, panoramic vistas, strategic bunkering, and pristine Bermuda grass. Routinely recognized among Texas’s top courses, it is praised for combining natural hill country beauty with Nicklaus’ masterful, challenging design.

Caddie Tip

The wind direction changes notably as you move from the lower front nine into the higher, rugged middle stretch—club up on elevated tee shots, especially at 3 and 12. Putts break subtly off the ridgelines. Take conservative lines on back-nine tee shots, especially with the natural hazards in play.

The Main Challenge

The most daunting challenge comes in the middle holes, routed along the elevated ridgeline—narrow landing zones, swirling winds, and sloped greens demand full attention. Holes 10–13 are especially tough, requiring both distance and accuracy, and even the best players must navigate strategic bunkering and elevation changes.

The Good

Golfers rave about Summit Rock’s spectacular vistas and drama of the routing, with several panoramic hilltop tee boxes providing awe-inspiring views. The variety in hole design, from strategic short par 4s to challenging long approaches, makes each round exciting, and Nicklaus’s creative shaping blends seamlessly with native landscape.

The Not So Good

Some members and guests note inconsistent green speeds and bunker maintenance during high-traffic months, as well as a course routing that can yield slow play on busy days. A few visitors wish for more walking-friendly paths and expanded practice areas to match the main course quality.

Signature Hole:

#

3

The par-3 3rd hole is Summit Rock’s signature, famed for its elevated tee offering a 30-mile view of the Hill Country. The hole demands a precise iron shot over a pronounced drop, with prevailing winds and deep bunkers guarding the expansive green, making both club selection and accuracy essential.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse features upscale dining, a pro shop, member lounges, modern locker rooms, and event spaces. Members enjoy attentive service, and there are regular club events. Outdoor patio offers scenic views, while locker and shower facilities are kept in top condition.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The course offers a full grass-tee driving range, dedicated short-game area with bunkers, and a putting green mirroring course speed. These are complemented by a modern pro shop. The Summit Rock clubhouse provides dining options, locker rooms, and shaded outdoor seating with course views.
