Course Report
The 18th hole is rare among U.S. championship courses as a par 3 finisher, a design feature that sets Misquamicut apart and often surprises first-time visitors.
About
Founded in 1895, The Misquamicut Club is a private, Donald Ross-designed 18-hole seaside links in Westerly, Rhode Island. Blending classic architecture with scenic Atlantic views, it features a short but strategic par-69 routing with undulating front nine and flatter back nine. The course offers challenging play and a high standard of conditioning.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively on the coastal holes, as winds and tidal ponds can significantly affect shot selection and club choice. Pay close attention to Donald Ross’s subtle green contours—particularly on approach shots, as many run-off areas await misjudged irons.
The Main Challenge
Frequent coastal winds, demanding approach shots to challenging Ross greens, and the proximity of tidal inlets create a tough test. The back nine’s flatter terrain masks subtle playability variations, and the finishing par-3 18th can make or break a match.
The Good
Golfers love Misquamicut’s blend of Golden Age architecture, Atlantic backdrops, and tranquil exclusivity. The combination of strategic shot-making, original Donald Ross design, and proximity to tidal waters makes it a site treasured by architecture enthusiasts and members alike.
The Not So Good
Some players note the tight routing and relatively short length can lead to green-to-tee congestion, especially when the course is busy. Others think more diversity in teeing options could help make the layout more accessible for a wider range of playing abilities.
