Course Report

UNM Championship Course has hosted multiple NCAA Men’s and Women’s Championships and several PGA Tour Qualifying Schools, making it a proving ground for future tour professionals.

About

A Robert ‘Red’ Lawrence design opened in 1967, UNM’s Championship Course is one of the Southwest’s finest layouts, offering a classic parkland experience. Host to multiple NCAA Championships and PGA Tour Q-School, it combines rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, and stunning views of Albuquerque. The course is renowned for its challenge, conditioning, and value.

Caddie Tip

Play smart and avoid being aggressive with blind shots, particularly on the closing holes. Take time to read the subtle breaks on the large greens and note the impact of altitude and wind on club selection—careful course management will reward patience more than sheer distance.

The Main Challenge

The layout demands length and accuracy off the tee, particularly with long par 3s and strategic doglegs. The rolling topography, frequent wind, and large subtly contoured greens test approach play and putting nerve throughout the round. Water hazards on the back nine add to the finish’s drama and challenge.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the Championship Course for its superb value and mix of challenging holes, rolling terrain, and expertly maintained greens. The dramatic elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and mountain views create a memorable round, while the accessibility and welcoming atmosphere make it a favorite among visitors and locals.

The Not So Good

Some players comment on the occasional firmness of the greens and pace of play during tournament or high-traffic periods. Others wish for updated clubhouse amenities or more consistent bunker conditioning, though these concerns are minor compared to the overall playing experience.
