About

Bernhard Langer was the inaugural world number one when the Official World Golf Rankings were introduced in 1986, making him the first officially ranked number one male golfer.

Bernhard Langer is a celebrated German golf course architect and professional golfer, known for both his design contributions and an illustrious career spanning five decades. Born in Anhausen, Germany, in 1957, he turned professional in 1972 and quickly became one of the most recognized figures in international golf. Langer is a two-time Masters Tournament champion (1985, 1993), and he became the sport’s first ever world number one when the Official World Golf Rankings were established in 1986. With 42 European Tour wins—the second most in history—plus victories on the PGA Tour and tournaments across all six continents, he has demonstrated remarkable global success. Langer played in ten Ryder Cups for Europe, captaining the team to victory in 2004. As a course architect, he has been involved in projects such as Portmarnock Links in Ireland and Costa Navarino in Greece. Langer is also renowned for his dominance in senior golf, being the only player to win all five senior majors.
