He is noted for several highly regarded courses, including Apple Valley Golf Course in Ohio, Spruce Run at Grand Traverse Resort, Travis Pointe Country Club in Michigan, and the Donald Ross Memorial Course at Boyne Highlands, which was named the Best New Resort Course in America by Golf Digest in 1990. As a dedicated golfer, Newcomb played in the Masters as an amateur and served as golf coach for the University of Michigan.
