About

Althaus was inspired to pursue golf architecture after caddying at Cypress Point Club, experiencing firsthand one of Dr. Alister MacKenzie’s legendary designs as a teenager.

Christian Althaus is a respected German golf course architect based in Düsseldorf, Germany, with over 25 years of experience. His formative years in golf began as a teenager when he spent summers in California, exposed to high-standard courses and learning under industry leaders, which ignited his passion for golf course design. Althaus holds a Professional Diploma in Golf Course Architecture from the European Institute of Golf Course Architects and is a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Architects. He leads Althaus Golfdesign and has worked on more than 40 projects across Germany and Europe, encompassing both new builds and major renovations, such as the acclaimed Golf Club Föhr and Marienburger Golf Club. Althaus is known for his fascination with classic strategic design, frequently traveling to study historic layouts in the USA, UK, and Ireland. As a former German university golf champion and accomplished amateur, his player’s perspective deeply informs his design philosophy.
