About

David Gordon unearthed a set of lost writings by legendary architect Donald Ross in his attic, which later became the basis for the best-selling book 'Golf Has Never Failed Me.'

David Gordon (1922–2017) was a distinguished American golf course architect and the son of William F. Gordon, one of the original members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). Growing up in a golf architecture family, David gained early exposure while his father worked with renowned designers such as Howard Toomey, William Flynn, and Donald Ross. After serving as an instructor pilot in World War II, he studied agronomy at Penn State University before joining his father’s design firm in 1952. Together, the Gordons created many respected courses, including those at Saucon Valley Country Club, DuPont Country Club, and Stanwich Club. David also independently designed notable courses such as Hershey’s Mill Golf Club, Glenhardie Country Club, and Rockland Lake Golf Course. He became an ASGCA Fellow and served as its president in 1959–60. Gordon’s deep knowledge and lasting influence on American golf course architecture is reflected in his five-decade career and mentorship within the industry.
