Course Report
The club sits on land once part of a historic farming hamlet called Stanwich—a blend of Stamford and Greenwich, the two bordering towns.
About
The Stanwich Club is a renowned private course in Greenwich, Connecticut, originally designed by William and David Gordon in 1964 and later renovated by Tom Fazio's team. Known for its challenging, tree-lined layout on former farmland and slick bentgrass greens, Stanwich has hosted multiple USGA championships and remains a magnet for top-level amateur and professional events.
Caddie Tip
Accuracy off the tee is essential as mature trees line every fairway. Approach shots should be played to the safe side of the pin due to the slick, sloped surfaces and closely guarded bentgrass greens. Always factor in the subtle breaks and back-to-front slopes on approach and putts.
The Main Challenge
Stanwich challenges golfers with demanding tee shots through mature tree corridors, frequent water hazards, and fast, undulating greens. Precision shot-making is critical. The course also features several long par 4s and risk-reward holes that test decision-making under pressure.
The Good
Golfers praise the immaculate bentgrass greens, which are among the fastest and truest in the region, and the consistent championship-level conditioning. The secluded, tranquil setting, combined with a strategic, memorable layout, creates a top-tier playing experience that appeals to tournament amateurs and professionals alike.
The Not So Good
Some members and guests have noted the course's formidable challenge can be daunting for higher handicappers. Others wish for more relaxed access policies for guests, as the club is very exclusive. Occasional drainage issues after heavy rains are also mentioned due to the course's flat terrain.
Signature Hole:
#
13
The par 3 13th is a dramatic hole that demands a tee shot over a creek and then a pond to a raised, L-shaped green ringed with bunkers. The putting surface is slick and wickedly undulating, making it both visually striking and a formidable test of accuracy and nerve.
Clubhouse
Stanwich offers luxurious locker rooms, a formal dining area, casual grill room, pro shop, and seasonal outdoor dining. Locker attendants provide attentive service. The clubhouse is known for its tradition and prestige, providing a welcoming environment for both members and guests.
Practice Facilities
The club features a grass driving range, short game practice areas, multiple putting greens, and two Full Swing Golf Simulators for year-round indoor training and club fitting. Facilities are well-maintained and available to members for lessons and warm-ups before rounds.
