Course Report
Butler National is famously men-only and hosted the PGA Tour's Western Open from 1974 until 1990. The course has maintained strict exclusivity and is often ranked among the best and most difficult in the United States.
About
Butler National Golf Club, located in Oak Brook, was founded by Paul Butler and designed by George and Tom Fazio. The club opened in 1972 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the toughest, most exclusive inland tests in the U.S. Its tree-lined fairways, strategic hazards, and small, contoured greens challenge even elite players. Tom Fazio has updated the course in recent years.
Caddie Tip
Off the tee, focus on accuracy over distance—deep rough, sprawling bunkers, and overhanging trees punish drives that miss the fairway. Approach shots demand precise distance control, as many greens are both small and sharply contoured. Pay special attention to wind direction on the exposed holes and avoid short-siding yourself.
The Main Challenge
The course’s greatest challenge is its relentless demand for precise placement on every shot. Out-of-bounds, water, mature trees, and small, contoured greens leave little room for error. Length is a constant factor, and approach shots often require pinpoint wedge or long iron play to avoid slick, tightly guarded greens.
The Good
Members rave about the pristine conditions, world-class greens, and the incredible degree of challenge presented by the tight, tree-lined fairways. The club's privacy and attentive service create a uniquely exclusive experience, and the course is regarded as one of Tom Fazio’s greatest architectural achievements.
The Not So Good
The club’s all-male membership policy is the most commonly raised concern, which has kept Butler from modern championship hosting. Some also wish for greater diversity in hole scenery and more public visibility. The demanding walk and punishing setup can be overwhelming to higher-handicap players.
Signature Hole:
#
8
The signature hole, the par 3 8th, plays 214 yards through a tight chute of overhanging trees to a small green fronted by water. This demanding shot requires absolute precision and is widely considered among the most difficult par 3s anywhere, punishing even slight mishits with water or deep trouble.
Clubhouse
Members enjoy a grand, traditional clubhouse with formal dining, private lounges, locker rooms, and elite personal service. There are no pools or spas, but the focus is on golfing tradition, hospitality, and first-class dining and bar experiences.
Practice Facilities
Butler National provides a comprehensive practice facility featuring an expansive grass range, chipping areas, bunkers, and putting greens mirroring course conditions. Staff and caddie support are among the best in the region, offering private techniques and club-fitting services for members.
