Course Report
The course was built on a former pineapple plantation and features some of the most dramatic elevation changes on the PGA TOUR.
About
The Kapalua Plantation Course is a world-renowned Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains. As host of the PGA TOUR’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, it features dramatic ocean views, rolling elevation changes, wide fairways, and vast undulating greens. The course is both a championship test and a memorable Hawaiian golfing experience.
Caddie Tip
The Plantation Course demands thoughtful club selection due to frequent elevation changes and often strong winds. Play for the generous landing areas, but respect the speed and contours of the enormous greens. Use approach shots that land short and run up to the flag, and aim to keep your ball below the hole whenever possible.
The Main Challenge
Elevation changes and ever-present trade winds make club selection and judgment difficult, and the large, sloping greens can turn two-putts into a challenge from long range. The vast fairways are inviting, but recovery from steep slopes and tricky lies makes scoring tough. Strategic decision-making and managing angles into greens are key to a good round.
The Good
Golfers rave about the breathtaking ocean views visible from nearly every hole, the thrilling elevation changes, and the opportunity to play a PGA TOUR venue. The wide fairways and generous greens make it enjoyable and memorable for all skill levels, while the finishing stretch provides excitement and the chance for dramatic scoring swings.
The Not So Good
Players sometimes comment on the greens being extremely challenging due to their size and undulation, leading to difficult reads and lengthy putts. Pace of play can stretch due to the course’s popularity and its dramatic topography, and the high greens fees mean some visitors hope for occasionally more accessible rates for non-resort guests.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The signature 18th hole is a par 5 that measures over 660 yards from the championship tees, sweeping dramatically downhill with breathtaking ocean views. Its wide fairway and steep descent encourage players to take bold shots, while the approach to the amphitheater green rewards risk-takers. The hole routinely produces some of the longest drives in professional golf.
Clubhouse
The Plantation clubhouse features upscale dining, a fully stocked pro shop, locker rooms, rental clubs, and panoramic views of the course and coastline. The restaurant is praised for its Hawaiian cuisine and setting. Onsite staff provide attentive service, and the atmosphere is relaxed yet refined.
Practice Facilities
Kapalua offers a comprehensive golf academy with a full driving range, large putting and chipping greens, and dedicated short game areas. Lessons with noted instructors are available for all levels. The facilities are modern and well-maintained, providing an ideal preparation environment before the round.
