Course Report
The Devil’s Cauldron (hole 4) has been called one of the world’s most beautiful par 3s, and the course itself was prominently featured in the Walt Disney film 'The Emperor Waltz' starring Bing Crosby.
About
Fairmont Banff Springs (Stanley Thompson) is a historic mountain course in Banff National Park designed by Stanley Thompson in 1928. The par-71 layout is famed for dramatic views of the Bow River, towering mountains, and tree-lined fairways. This resort course is widely considered one of Canada’s finest and delivers a memorable, challenging experience in spectacular alpine surroundings.
Caddie Tip
Club selection and accuracy are vital on the par-3 fourth — the elevation and mountain air mean shots play shorter. The front nine is more open, but beware the closing stretch, which requires precise drives. Pay close attention to subtle green breaks, as many putts are affected by local mountain slopes.
The Main Challenge
Banff Springs tests golfers with frequent elevation changes, tight tree-lined holes, and distractions from spectacular vistas. The closing stretch demands accuracy and nerve, especially the multi-tiered greens, swirling winds on mountain holes, and forced carries over hazards. Smart course management is key throughout the round.
The Good
Golfers consistently rave about the awe-inspiring mountain scenery, the legendary routing by Stanley Thompson, and the peaceful ambiance that immerses players in nature. Many say every hole offers a postcard view—especially the famous par-3 Devil's Cauldron. The mix of strategic design with world-class views makes for an unforgettable round.
The Not So Good
Some golfers note that green fees are among the highest in Canada, especially during peak season, and others mention pace of play can be slow on busy summer days. Occasional maintenance on greens and fairways during early and late season may be noticeable due to the shortened season and tough mountain climate.
Signature Hole:
#
4
Hole 4, a par 3 nicknamed the ‘Devil’s Cauldron,’ is one of the most photographed holes in Canada. Golfers face a dramatic downhill shot over a glacial lake, framed by towering spruce trees and the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Rundle—a visually stunning test of club selection and accuracy.
Clubhouse
Golfers enjoy a stunning clubhouse with panoramic views, full locker rooms, a pro shop with apparel and souvenirs, upscale dining options, and a bar. The iconic Fairmont Banff Springs hotel is nearby, offering luxury accommodation, a spa, and fine dining.
Practice Facilities
The course features a spacious driving range, dedicated short game area, and large practice putting green. Excellent staff provide instruction and clinics. Top-tier rental equipment is available, along with friendly caddies.
