Course Report

Baltusrol’s Lower Course was designated a National Historic Landmark and has hosted multiple U.S. Opens and PGA Championships, including being the site where Jack Nicklaus secured two of his major victories.

About

Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course in Springfield, New Jersey, is a historic parkland layout designed by A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1922. Known for its brawny par 4s and classic routing, the Lower Course is a regular major championship venue, famed for its elite conditioning and challenging yet fair setup, appealing to top professionals and passionate amateurs alike.

Caddie Tip

Manage your approach angles on the lengthy par 4s—position your tee shots to leave optimal angles into deep, well-contoured greens. The course plays firm and fast, and missing on the short side often eliminates your chance for par. Trust your yardages and consider the wind, especially late in the round.

The Main Challenge

The Lower Course’s primary challenge is its combination of length, strategic bunkering, and small, firm greens that demand accuracy and intelligent shot placement. Wind often plays a factor, and the closing stretch is notoriously difficult under tournament pressure, especially the par-4 17th and signature 18th.

The Good

Golfers rave about the history and pedigree of the Lower Course, with its storied major championship past and exceptional course conditioning. The classic Tillinghast design provides a stern test for low handicappers but rewards creativity, precision, and sound strategy throughout the round.

The Not So Good

Some players wish for greater diversity in shorter holes and increased variety in green contours on several par 4s. The exclusivity and private member culture make access very difficult, and in peak season, pace can be slowed during tournament play or special events.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The iconic 18th is a long par 5 finishing hole, featuring demanding fairway bunkers on the right, a pond guarding the left, and a dramatic approach to a well-protected green. As the site of memorable major-winning moments, it requires a precise tee shot and strategic iron play, making it one of the great closing holes in championship golf.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The historic clubhouse features formal dining, casual grill rooms, pro shop, locker rooms, and event spaces. Members enjoy top-tier service, with options for banquets, private events, and full-service locker and equipment care in a grand, classic setting.
