About

Tillinghast worked on more than 350 golf courses as a consultant for the PGA of America in just one year, personally removing over 7,000 unnecessary bunkers to make the game more enjoyable for everyday players.

Albert Warren "A.W." Tillinghast was born on May 7, 1876, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known affectionately as "Tillie," he was one of America’s most prolific and influential golf course architects, credited with designing or renovating over 265 golf courses. Tillinghast was part of the highly esteemed “Philadelphia School” of golf architecture, alongside other legends such as William Flynn and George Crump.

Tillinghast’s career began with his first design at Shawnee Country Club in Pennsylvania, which opened in 1911. Over the next few decades, he shaped some of the most revered courses in golf, including Baltusrol Golf Club, Winged Foot Golf Club (East & West courses), Oak Hills Country Club, and Bethpage State Park—all renowned for hosting major professional championships. His designs are celebrated for their strategic complexity, aesthetic appeal, and thoughtful use of bunkering and green contours.

Beyond design, Tillinghast was a prolific writer in golf magazines during the Golden Era, shaping modern golf course philosophy with his principle of “The Course Beautiful,” which balanced visual beauty with an engaging challenge for all skill levels.

The Great Depression slowed new projects, but Tillinghast continued as a PGA of America consultant, improving courses across the country. He retired to Southern California, where he passed away in 1942.
