Course Report

Longue Vue features faithful recreations of classic Scottish holes, including the 'Redan', 'Eden', and 'Alps', connecting Pittsburgh’s golf scene with the roots of the game.

About

Longue Vue Club, designed in 1920 by Robert White and later restored by A.W. Tillinghast and others, is a private, historic golf course near Pittsburgh. Renowned for its panoramic Allegheny River views, classic design with Scottish template holes and slick greens, it delivers a challenging and memorable parkland layout. The course spans 6,563 yards and features subtle elevation and mature trees.

Caddie Tip

Pay attention to subtle slopes on the greens—putts often break more than they appear. On the signature 16th ('Redan'), aim to land your ball short or right of the green to allow it to feed left. Conservative tee shots leaving uphill approaches serve best on many tree-lined holes where distance control is rewarded.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at Longue Vue Club is its combination of fast, undulating greens and demanding approach shots, often with significant elevation change and well-placed bunkers. Success requires strategic navigation of tree-lined fairways, precise distance control, and the nerve to execute on greens renowned for subtle breaks.

The Good

Golfers rave about the panoramic views overlooking the Allegheny River, the distinctive routing with classic template holes, and the elegant, classic club ambiance. Many appreciate the test of precision and strategy required on fast, undulating greens, as well as the tranquillity and seclusion provided by its mature, tree-lined parkland setting.

The Not So Good

Some players note the course’s high difficulty may intimidate less experienced golfers. Access for non-members is extremely limited, and slow play can occur on busy tournament days given the walkable, hilly terrain and challenging greens. Occasional bunker or fairway maintenance scheduling is also mentioned.

The par-3 16th at Longue Vue Club is a celebrated replica of the famed 'Redan' template. Playing slightly downhill with daunting bunkering guarding the green and a sharp right-to-left tilt, club selection and precise shotmaking are essential. The view from the tee stretches across the Allegheny Valley, making it both visually and strategically memorable.

Clubhouse

The historic clubhouse offers fine dining, casual grill, lounge spaces, locker rooms, event spaces, and views of the course and river valley. Members can expect upscale service, social events, private meeting spaces, and well-appointed facilities tailored to both golf and non-golf activities.

Practice Facilities
