Course Report

The course held the Canadian PGA Championship in 1979, where Lee Trevino set the course record of 67.

About

The National Golf Club of Canada in Woodbridge, Ontario is widely acclaimed as the toughest and best course in Canada. Designed by George Fazio and Tom Fazio, it features a dramatic parkland layout with undulating, tree-lined fairways and some of the fastest, most challenging greens in North America. The club is highly exclusive and private.

Caddie Tip

Focus on careful club selection for approach shots, as fairway bunkers and slopes can push balls away from the ideal landing areas. On the greens, play extra break on downhill putts—greens are among the quickest anywhere. Take note of the swirling winds on the back nine, which can influence club choice significantly.

The Main Challenge

The toughest stretch at The National is the back nine, where water hazards, multi-tiered greens, and narrow landing zones combine. The fast, sloping greens can turn even the shortest putts into treacherous tests. Consistent course management and keeping the ball below the hole are critical to scoring well.

The Good

Golfers rave about the demanding design, particularly the challenge of the greens, which are both beautifully surfaced and notoriously difficult. Members also love the tranquil, secluded setting and the high standard of club amenities, making for a complete and memorable club experience.

The Not So Good

Access is limited due to its private, men-only membership policy. The extreme challenge may also deter higher handicap golfers, and some cite that occasional greens can be so fast and undulating that they border on unfair for average players.

Signature Hole:

#

18

Clubhouse

The modern clubhouse boasts spacious locker rooms, gourmet dining with Italian specialties, private meeting spaces, and an elite wine selection. Members enjoy sweeping views of the 18th hole from the patio and access to attentive staff and impressive hospitality throughout.
