Course Report
Bedford Springs was one of the earliest courses in America to reach 6,000 yards, and its recent restoration used 70,000 cubic yards of topsoil to elevate and protect the course after historic flooding.
About
Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa features a historic 18-hole, par-72 course nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, originally designed by Spencer Oldham and later refined by A.W. Tillinghast and Donald Ross, then restored by Ron Forse. With bentgrass surfaces and mountain scenery, it offers classic architecture and strategic variety.
Caddie Tip
On approach shots, pay careful attention to elevation changes, as mountain terrain affects distance. The restored greens have subtle slopes requiring thoughtful reads. The par 3s demand precision and careful club selection due to strategic bunkering and water hazards.
The Main Challenge
The toughest part of Omni Bedford Springs is managing club selection and accuracy on holes routed along Shobers Run and through the valley’s elevation changes. Strategic bunkering, water hazards, and restored greens demand thoughtful shot-making, particularly on par 3s and par 4s exposed to wind.
The Good
Golfers most appreciate the course’s blend of classic design—the work of three legendary architects—and its peaceful, scenic setting surrounded by mountains and flowing streams. The historic ambiance and recent restoration make every round memorable for both purists and resort guests.
The Not So Good
Players occasionally mention that post-rain drainage can be slow in lower areas, impacting playability. Some guests desire faster green speeds at times, and occasional bunker maintenance has been noted for improvement, especially during early season rounds.
Signature Hole:
#
14
The 14th hole, a par 3, plays across Shobers Run to a green framed by the mountainous terrain. It is well-defended by bunkers and water, making club selection and accuracy essential, and offers panoramic views of the valley and the historic hotel in the distance.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse includes a well-appointed golf shop, locker rooms, dining options with mountain views, and attentive staff. Golfers also enjoy access to the resort’s spa, pools, restaurants, and expansive lounge areas for a complete leisure experience.
Practice Facilities
The facility offers a dual-ended practice range, a large putting green, and professional instruction. Warm-up balls are provided, and guests benefit from ample space for both short and long game practice before a round.
