Course Report

Valhalla has hosted the PGA Championship four times and was the site of the legendary 2000 playoff duel between Tiger Woods and Bob May.

About

Valhalla Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986, stands as Kentucky’s premier championship golf venue. Host to multiple major events including PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup, it features rolling terrain, gorgeous bentgrass greens, and a world-class layout set across 500 acres. Renowned for its formidable challenge and exceptional conditioning, Valhalla embodies elite American golf.

Caddie Tip

Play for position and respect the slopes on the slick bentgrass greens—many approach shots require precise placement below the hole. The closing stretch is especially demanding, so conserve your energy and focus for holes 16–18, and don’t forget to use the ample practice facilities to dial in your short game.

The Main Challenge

Nicklaus’s design at Valhalla is relentless, especially on the finish—water hazards, bold bunkering, and complex green contours punish off-line shots. Well-defended greens place a premium on approach accuracy, and high rough along with championship speeds raise the stakes for every swing.

The Good

Most golfers rave about the atmosphere and conditioning—playing Valhalla means walking the same fairways as major champions. The Jack Nicklaus design blends strategic interest, scenic holes, and grand tournament drama, especially as you navigate the back nine’s challenge and the thrilling amphitheater finish.

The Not So Good

Some visitors find the course’s difficulty daunting, especially from longer tees. The rough can be penal, and the pressure of historic closing holes can intimidate average players. Members sometimes cite limited accessibility during major-event prep, and guests occasionally mention the exclusivity as a barrier.

Its amphitheater setting has crowned major champions and delivered some of the most iconic moments in PGA history.

Clubhouse
