Course Report

Upon opening in 2021, St Patrick's Links was the highest new entry in GOLF Magazine's World Top 100, debuting at #55 and quickly rising into the top 50 within two years.

About

St Patrick's Links at Rosapenna, designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2021, dramatically traverses massive coastal dunes along Sheephaven Bay. The layout features naturalized bunkers, expansive fairways, and spectacular views, establishing itself as a world-class links experience on Ireland's rugged northwest coast. The course is acclaimed for its architectural variety and integration with the natural landscape.

Caddie Tip

Play approaches conservatively, as the wind often shifts near the bay, especially on holes 15–17. Staying below the hole is crucial, and missing greens on the correct side reduces the risk of tough recovery shots from native grasses. Trust sightlines—Tom Doak’s routing often favors bold but well-placed tee shots.

The Main Challenge

The layout tests every aspect of a golfer’s game—breezy conditions increase the premium on accurate driving and trajectory control. The back nine’s routing through massive dunes and smaller landing areas make club selection and thoughtful course management crucial, especially as you approach the closing stretch along the water.

The Good

Golfers rave about the immense natural dunes, unique shot variety, and spectacular views of Sheephaven Bay. The Tom Doak design blends dramatic holes with wide fairways, allowing for strategic play in a truly untamed Irish coastal setting. Every hole feels different, making the routing consistently engaging.

The Not So Good

Some visitors comment that the course is still maturing agronomically, with areas of rough and fairway turf establishing after extensive construction. Early reviews occasionally mention wind as a challenge for high-handicap players, and some would like additional on-course amenities such as rest shelters.
