Course Report

Crystal Downs is one of only a handful of courses globally to be designed by both Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell. It is consistently ranked among the world's top 25 courses.

About

Crystal Downs Country Club, designed by Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell in 1929, is a revered private club nestled between Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake. Renowned for its distinctive routing, strategic design, ever-present winds, and dramatic natural setting, Crystal Downs is perennially ranked among the top courses in the U.S. and worldwide. Access is strictly reserved for members and guests.

Caddie Tip

Trust the wind more than your yardage books—conditions change quickly off the lakes. Play to the wider targets, as approaches from the wrong side often mean three putts or worse. Use local caddies for accurate reads on the famously contoured greens, and don't hesitate to lay back short of trouble off the tee.

The Main Challenge

The course's main defense is the ever-present, unpredictable wind rolling off Lake Michigan, which can turn moderate-length holes into difficult tests. On top of this, MacKenzie's unique greens—with steep slopes and sharp contours—require precisely shaped approach shots and putts. Off-target shots are severely punished, making scoring a continual challenge.

The Good

Golfers love the breathtaking combination of natural beauty and legendary course architecture at Crystal Downs. The wind-swept fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and imaginative green complexes make every round memorable. Strategic shot-making and a classic routing ensure that regular play remains engaging, challenging, and endlessly interesting for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Because access is so restricted, many passionate golfers lament they may never walk these fairways. Occasional conditioning issues occur late in very dry or wet seasons due to local weather, and some players would welcome more practice space or upgraded locker room facilities, given the club's prominence and global status.

Signature Hole:

#

7

No items found.

The par-3 7th hole is famed for its remarkable kidney-shaped green, guarded by steep slopes and challenging undulations. The approach demands precise distance control and creativity to hold the narrow, contoured surface. Swirling winds off Lake Michigan can make club selection especially tricky, adding to the drama and reputation of this unforgettable one-shotter.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The original clubhouse features cozy, traditional locker rooms, a friendly pro shop, and formal and casual dining options overlooking both lakes. Amenities are understated but well-kept, in keeping with club tradition. Visitors enjoy the ambiance and views, while experienced staff add to the warm, exclusive feel of the club.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Crystal Downs offers a classic practice experience, including a driving range, chipping and pitching areas, and an expansive putting green. While efficient and of good quality, the range is relatively modest in size compared to modern facilities and mainly supports warm-up and short-game skill work. No high-tech training bays or year-round indoor options.
