Course Report
President Bill Clinton famously played Ballybunion in 1998, bringing global attention to the course, which Tom Watson called the finest links he had ever seen outside America.
About
Ballybunion Golf Club's Old Course sits on Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coast in County Kerry and is one of the world’s most revered links layouts. Opened in 1893 and later extended to 18 holes, this renowned course features wild dunes, cliff-lined holes, and was shaped by architect Lionel Hewson with refinements by later designers.
Caddie Tip
Take extra care with club selection on holes exposed to the Atlantic wind, as conditions can dramatically change shot requirements in seconds. When playing the 11th and 7th, favor safety over aggression—missing fairways risks becoming lost in punishing dune rough.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge at Ballybunion Old comes from contending with swirling Atlantic winds, deep rough among the dunes, and fast, undulating fescue greens. Accurate tee shots and prudent strategy are essential, especially on the quick, narrow fairways hugging high dunes or clifftops.
The Good
Golfers rave about Ballybunion's exhilarating run through giant sand dunes set along Ireland’s Atlantic coastline. The combination of breathtaking scenery, classic links design, and stretch of cliffside holes creates a golfing experience that is both inspiring and memorable. Many cite the stretch from holes 7 to 11 as among the greatest in the world.
The Not So Good
While the dramatic natural terrain adds to the course’s challenge, some players find the extremely penal rough and blind shots overly punishing, especially in windy conditions. Pace of play can lag during busy periods and some believe a few opening holes lack the dramatic appeal found later in the round.
Signature Hole:
#
11
The 11th hole, a par 4 known as ‘Watsons’, is an extraordinary challenge that hugs the cliff edge, weaving between towering dunes before finishing at a green set before crashing Atlantic waves. This dramatic dogleg requires a precise tee shot and an exacting approach to a plateau green exposed to the elements.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse boasts classic Irish hospitality with full dining, a well-stocked pro shop, and scenic lounge areas overlooking the dunes and ocean. Locker rooms, equipment rentals, and caddie booking are available, making for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Practice Facilities
The club features a short game area, putting greens, and basic driving range. While not extensive, these facilities offer space to fine-tune your game before facing the demanding links ahead.
