About

Simpson was famous for arriving at his design sites in a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce, underlining his eccentric and aristocratic lifestyle.

Tom Simpson was a highly influential English golf course architect, celebrated for his artistry and unique design philosophy. After studying law at Trinity College, Cambridge, Simpson left his legal career behind in 1911 to devote himself to golf architecture. He quickly partnered with Herbert Fowler, embracing a strategic approach to course design, in contrast to the penal Victorian tradition. Simpson became known for his eccentric, independent style and refusal to produce work he deemed unoriginal, regardless of clients' wishes. As a partner in the Fowler, Abercromby, Simpson and Croome firm, he masterminded several continental European masterpieces, including Morfontaine and Chantilly in France, and made significant renovations at County Louth and Cruden Bay. Notably, Simpson often worked with wealthy individuals, creating bespoke private courses for some of Europe’s elite families. His minimalist bunkering, strategic hazards, and artistic green placements are still highly regarded. Simpson died in 1964, leaving a legacy as a transformative figure in golf design.
