About
Sunningdale Golf Club (New) is a celebrated heathland course in Berkshire, England, designed by Harry Colt and Tom Simpson. Opened in 1923, the New Course is renowned for its wide fairways bordered by heather, beautifully contoured greens, and a more open moorland feel than its sister Old Course. Often ranked among the UK's top courses, it combines challenge and playability.
Caddie Tip
The heather bordering fairways can quickly turn a stray shot into a double bogey, so aim for the widest part of landing areas off the tee. Pay close attention to green contours; approaches left below the hole will leave the best putts. Trust the yardages and avoid aggressive recoveries from heather.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge is controlling tee shots and approaches with so much heather flanking the landing areas. Miss the fairway and recovery is tough, while the contoured, fast greens demand precise short game and touch. The course’s wind and some long carries increase the difficulty, testing players’ all-round ability.
The Good
Golfers love the wonderful heathland setting, immaculately maintained fairways, and the sense of scale and openness. Strategic bunkering and the memorable contours of every green add to the course’s reputation, as does the classic Harry Colt design that blends natural beauty with clever architecture.
The Not So Good
Some golfers note expensive visitor fees and rigorous restrictions on tee times, making access difficult for non-members. The firm turf and thick heather challenge weaker players, and overly punitive rough in areas can detract from playability for high handicappers.
Signature Hole:
#
10
The 10th hole, a beautiful par 4, is renowned for its challenge and setting. Its fairway is framed by heather and pines, leading to a well-protected green that requires a precise approach. This hole typifies the heathland character and demands both an accurate tee shot and deft touch around the green.
Clubhouse
The historic clubhouse features elegantly appointed locker rooms, a formal dining room with jacket-and-tie dress code, bar, and stocked pro shop. Afternoon tea and full meals are available for guests, with comfortable seating areas and quality service.
Practice Facilities
Excellent facilities include a full driving range, extensive short-game area, and large putting green. Professional instruction and club fitting are available. Complimentary range balls are provided, and qualified staff offer custom coaching as well as golf-day administration.
