Course Report
Nanea is co-owned by Charles Schwab and George Roberts, and is so private there is no signage at the entrance and access is strictly invitation-only.
About
Nanea Golf Club, designed by David McLay Kidd and opened in 2003, sits on the slopes of Mount Hualalai overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This ultra-exclusive, private club features a unique links-style layout on rugged lava terrain with wide fairways and large, undulating greens. The course is renowned for its immaculate conditions, strategic challenge, and one of the most secluded experiences in all of American golf.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to the slopes and subtle breaks in the greens, which are far trickier than they first appear. Approach shots that leave an uphill or straightforward putt offer a big advantage. The wind can shift rapidly, so always check direction before committing on tee boxes and approaches.
The Main Challenge
The most difficult aspect of Nanea is mastering the greens, which feature severe undulations and subtle breaks, often confounded by the natural gradient of the mountainside. Add shifting winds and elevation changes throughout, and the course places a premium on approach shots and high-level putting skills.
The Good
Golfers love the club’s extraordinary privacy, immaculate playing surfaces, and the dramatic setting on the slopes of Mount Hualalai with panoramic Pacific Ocean views. The course provides a feeling of absolute seclusion and tranquility, far from the crowds of resort golf on the island. The links-style routing, firm turf, and stunning vistas set it apart.
The Not So Good
Because of its exclusivity, very few golfers will ever have access to Nanea. Some visitors also note that the constant elevation changes and optical illusions in the greens can make it frustrating for first-timers to judge distance and break, making scoring difficult until you learn the course nuances.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The par 3 17th hole plays 236 yards from the back, offering one of the most stunning Big Island vistas from the tee. Elevated and fully exposed to ocean breezes, this hole demands precise club selection and a solid carry over native terrain to a green surrounded by subtle slopes and trouble. It is memorable as much for its view as its challenge.
Clubhouse
Nanea’s clubhouse is a stunning architectural feature with unique copper domes reflecting the volcanic landscape. The interior incorporates native Hawaiian materials and motifs. Members enjoy private dining, luxurious locker rooms, and a tranquil atmosphere with personalized service.
Practice Facilities
The club has world-class practice areas, including a large driving range with ocean views, an expansive short game area, and multiple putting greens mirroring the contours, speeds, and firmness found on the course. Facilities are meticulously maintained to the same standards as the main course.
